SONO.STUDIOS
We are an experimental design practice specializing in products, art, and installations. In an era defined by advances in functional materials, digital fabrication, and immersive technologies, we reimagine surfaces and objects as responsive space and skins—challenging traditional materiality and the blurring dualities between the tangible and intangible, the real and the virtual.
‘‘Sono' is a simple word with profound meaning. In Indonesian, it means 'there'—a place, or a future, full of possibility, discovery, and longing. In Italian, it means 'I am,' embodying identity and existence, while in Japanese, it signifies 'garden,' a space for growth and creativity. At Sono, we embrace these diverse meanings, drawing inspiration from the intersections of cultures, ideas, and experiences.
At the core of our work is a passion for exploring the confluence of art, culture, and technology. By blending craftsmanship, scientific and engineering curiosity, and playful innovation, we craft magical, intimate experiences that inspire new ways to connect, express, and interact with the world around us.

Irmandy Wicaksono
Wicaksono’s collective work explore the relationship between movements, such as physical gestures and choreography, and intimate embodied sonic experience. By applying an artistic approach to technological textile design and experimenting with various functional and non-functional fibers and fabric architectures, Wicaksono augments knitted textiles with sensory and computation capabilities that bridge and merge the physical and digital worlds to evoke memories and novel experiences.
His work and installations have been widely featured in journals, conferences, and media outlets such as ACM, IEEE, Nature, Popular Science, Designboom, and Domus Magazine. They have also been exhibited at the KSU Textile Museum, MIT Museum, Ben Shahn Center for the Visual Arts, Cambridge Science Festival, Boston Fashion Week, Lexus Intersect Tokyo, and the World Economic Forum. Wicaksono’s accolades include the SXSW and MIDI Innovation Awards, the Fast Company Innovation by Design Award, the Lexus Design Award, Architizer A+ Award, the Architect’s Newspaper Best of Design Award, and the Schnitzer Prize in the Visual Arts.
